Jeep® Wrangler Named SEMA’s ‘Hottest 4x4-SUV’ for Fourth Consecutive Year; Mopar Announces New Jeep Performance Parts and Accessories

  • Jeep® Wrangler recognized as ‘Hottest 4x4-SUV’ for fourth consecutive year at SEMA
  • New Mopar performance parts and accessories for the Jeep Wrangler have been added to the catalog of more than 300 already available
November 5, 2013 , Las Vegas - The Jeep® Wrangler was recognized as the “Hottest 4x4-SUV” for a fourth consecutive year at the 2013 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) trade show in Las Vegas. The SEMA Award recognizes vehicle models that specialty equipment manufacturers believe are the best platforms for accessorization and that showcase the year’s coolest products.

SEMA President and CEO Chris Kersting presented the award to Pietro Gorlier, President and CEO of Mopar, Chrysler Group LLC’s service, parts and customer-care brand, at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

“Consumers are increasingly interested in customizing vehicles, so having an accessory-friendly platform is important,” said Kersting. “The Jeep Wrangler has consistently ranked Number One as the Hottest 4x4-SUV since the inception of the SEMA Award, a clear reflection of its versatility.”

“It’s amazing to have the Jeep Wrangler recognized for a fourth straight year by SEMA with this award,” Gorlier said. “The Wrangler is our most accessorized vehicle and to see it consistently winning accolades is a demonstration of the quality of the vehicle and the work that Mopar has put in to develop accessories and quality Jeep Performance Parts. Enthusiasts will be happy to know we have just added new offerings to our more than 300 performance parts and accessories already available for this vehicle to provide even more options for customization.”

Mopar and Jeep recently created Jeep Performance Parts as a portfolio of high-end, hard-core Jeep parts including axles, lift kits, bumpers, winches, skid plates and suspension components. These performance parts will offer factory-engineered solutions to increase off-road performance.

The following are the newest Mopar parts and accessories available for the Jeep Wrangler:

2014 Jeep Wrangler Trail Rated Kit: Strap it up and tow it along with this Trail Rated kit, which includes a durable, high-quality tow strap and two heavy-duty D-rings. A pair of gloves is included for protection and the kit is transported in an attractive Jeep carrying bag.

Front Axles: Engineered to exact specifications to bolt into any Jeep Wrangler from 2007 to 2014, these production front-axle assemblies come completely assembled and provide the next level of off-road performance. The Dana 44 axles include a 4:10 ratio, 5 x 5-inch bolt pattern and an electric locker with an available wiring kit.

Rear Axles: Engineered to exact specifications to bolt into any Jeep Wrangler from 2007 to 2014, these production rear-axle assemblies come completely assembled and provide the next level of off-road performance. The Dana 44 axles include a 4:10 ratio, 5 x 5-inch bolt pattern and an electric locker with an available wiring kit.

Hardtop Headliner:  Three years of development and testing were involved in creating this kit. The high-density foam-backed non-woven fabric serves a triple purpose, enhancing the appearance of the hardtop, boosting the efficiency of the Wrangler’s HVAC system and providing a quieter ride environment. Available for models 2007 and newer.

Black Grille: Juice up the Jeep Wrangler with personalized style by customizing it with a satin black grille. This Mopar accessory is a direct, easy replacement to the production body-color grille, and also features the hood seal and a matching black Jeep badge.

Side Visor:  Sunshine is a delight — up until it becomes a distraction. The fold-down Mopar side visor for the Jeep Wrangler is a low-cost, easy-to-install defense that blocks sidelong sunlight glare that can pull attention away from the road or trail.

2014 Jeep Wrangler
The iconic Jeep Wrangler – the most capable and recognized vehicle in the world – kicks off the new model year with new features such as a new Trail Rated Kit featuring two D-rings, a tow strap, gloves and a bag to store the items.  Clear park lamps and turn signal indicators replace the amber units, and Sport models can now be equipped with the Uconnect 6.5-inch touchscreen radio with hard drive storage and SiriusXM Radio.  Sport models also have an available 32-inch Tire and Wheel Group featuring semi-gloss black 17-inch Rubicon aluminum wheels and BF Goodrich KM LT255/75R17 off-road tires.

Chrysler Group’s 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine – two-time winner of the prestigious Ward’s 10 Best Engines award – delivers 285 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque and up to 21 miles per gallon. It is engineered to provide a broad torque band with a focus on low-end torque, an essential trait needed for extreme off-roading.  Engineers also designed the oil sump to provide oil to the pump even at extreme vehicle angles, and the alternator was placed up high so Wrangler can maintain its water-fording capability.

The 2014 Jeep Wrangler delivers unmatched off-road capability with legendary four-wheel drive and is produced with more than seven decades of 4x4 engineering experience.  Wrangler continues to offer a body-on-frame design, front and rear five-link suspension system, live axles, electronic lockers, and is one of the few mid-size SUVs that offer a six-speed manual transmission – in addition to its five-speed automatic transmission.

I Blame the JKU and Soccer Moms

Now before you go and accuse me of JK bashing, let me preface this by saying I've owned a JK longer than most readers. I bought mine in October 2006 before it even hit the showroom floor. I love it & I firmly believe it to be one of the most capable Jeeps ever made in stock form.

What makes a Jeep Wrangler? Is it the round headlights? Maybe the 7 slot grill? The boxy profile? In my opinion it's a combination of all these things but the most important feature is the solid front axle. As soon as I saw that Congress was reviewing safety complaints regarding "death wobble", I knew I was witnessing the possible death of this Wrangler staple. Why do I blame the JKU? As capable as it is, it's also the most comfortable and the 4 door makes it perfect for families. I should know, it was the reason I bought mine. Originally my Jeep was for my wife. She got tired of me complaining about wanting another Jeep. She finally conceded and gave me hers in trade for a minivan. Winner, winner, chicken dinner! Back on topic. Because of the comfort, added space and the modern conveniences like power windows and MyGig systems, there were more Unlimiteds sold than any other Wrangler. Not only that, but the new owners were hanging on to them. In the past, once the newness wore off and the "inconvenience" set in, it would get traded in on a more "urban friendly" vehicle.

Death-wobble has always been present in solid in solid axle vehicles. Once that vehicle is lifted, the chances are even greater that the driver will experience it. It is a correctable problem, but poorly made lift kits and ignorance on how to fix the problem made it more prevalent. Jeep can say they are doing it for the decrease weight, and I'm sure that is a factor to satisfy EPA needs, but the other reason is to boost sales. I don't fault Jeep for that. It's a business and the bottom line is important. But to sacrifice the solid front axle really will be the death nail for the Wrangler as the most capable, mass-produced, off road vehicle in production.

And you thought square headlights were a problem.

Closer to seeing the new '14 Cherokee on dealer lots.

"AUBURN HILLS, MI- The wait for the 2014 Jeep Cherokee is nearly over, according to Chrysler Group LLC. The Auburn Hills-based automaker has started shipping the mid-size sport utility vehicles to dealers, according to a Chrysler spokeswoman....(more)"

It will be nice to see the vehicles finally on dealer lots. I personally can't wait to get behind the wheel so I can judge for myself. I don't think Jeep is going to be anywhere near the projected 1.7 million units sold. The delay in production and the plague of problems will likely have an adverse effect on that number.

2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Recall

Statement: Warning-Light Illumination

October 1, 2013 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - Chrysler Group LLC will recall an estimated 132,000 SUVs to upgrade software that controls instrument-cluster lighting and active chassis systems.

Chrysler Group quality-control personnel observed reports of random warning-light illumination and instrument-cluster blackout. Both events occurred infrequently and appeared to resolve themselves by turning the vehicle’s ignition off and then on. However, regulatory compliance requires that clusters display complete information that is clearly legible.

Engineers discovered an issue in the vehicle’s anti-lock braking system (ABS) module that affects the instrument cluster display. The issue also has implications for the vehicle’s ABS and electronic stability control systems, but Chrysler Group is unaware of any reported problems involving either.

Chrysler Group is unaware of any associated accidents or injuries.

Chrysler Group will update instrument-cluster and ABS module software on certain 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokees. Most (91,559) are in the U.S.; 6,050 are in Canada; 2,662 are in Mexico; and 32,212 are outside the NAFTA region.

The upgrade will be performed at no cost to customers. Those affected will be notified by mail next month.

Customers who are concerned may call 1-800-853-1403.

Chrysler halts production of 2014 Cherokee

Chrysler Group LLC has put the brakes on production of its 2014 Jeep Cherokee, idling hundreds of workers at its Toledo Assembly Complex and assigning others to perform lengthy test drives of the all-new crossover.
It is just the latest in a series of snags for a product that CEO Sergio Marchionne says Chrysler cannot afford to get wrong.
The Cherokee was originally supposed to be in showrooms by July, but its launch has been delayed — first by problems with fit and finish, then by issues with its new nine-speed transmission. (more)

Subaru to debut tougher Outback for Australia's Outback

2014 Subaru Outback (Australian version)
If you're going to name a car after a specific location or region, you'd better make sure it's taken seriously in the place it's named for. You're not likely to see a Chevrolet Monte Carlo in Monaco, and the Alfa Romeo Montreal was never even officially offered in North America, but the Subaru Outback is another story...(more)

September 9, 2013 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - The all-new 2014 Jeep® Cherokee mid-size sport-utility vehicle (SUV) debuts a progressive exterior designed for the future with a global appeal. Fluid, sleek exterior lines highlight the efficient, wind-splitting upper body of the all-new Cherokee. The tough, protective lower body conveys the legendary capability that is characteristic of every Jeep. The rugged lower and smooth upper body is divided by the key waterline feature that connects the exterior 360 degrees.

The interior of the all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee is modern, inviting and comfortable. A sophisticated, new design, hand-sculpted forms, signature Jeep design cues, high-quality materials, precision craftsmanship and attention-to-detail raises the bar in the mid-size SUV segment. A cockpit loaded with easy-to-use, useful technology; clever, thoughtful storage features and 70 available safety and security features – including 10 standard air bags – give the driver and passengers everything they want for any adventure they take.

2014 Jeep Cherokee exterior designJeep designers were inspired to create a vehicle that remains true to the brand while moving it into the next era with a shape that is as efficient as the vehicle and ages gracefully without losing the DNA that makes it a Jeep. The all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee not only looks efficient and capable, but is efficient and capable – on-road, off-road and in all weather conditions.

“Our objective with the Cherokee was to visually convey that this is an all-new Jeep while still communicating legendary best-in-class capability,” said Mark Allen, Head of Jeep Design — Chrysler Group LLC. “But the rest of the equation has changed. Our vision was a smooth and flowing upper body with signature Jeep cues such as the peaked seven-slot grille, trapezoidal wheel arches and the functional ‘kink’ in the beltline mated to a tough, durable lower body. We wanted a design that is fluid and efficient yet still rugged and looks at home on the trail or at the theater.”

The all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee has a powerful stance, an aggressive wheel-to-body proportion and a commanding road presence. The aggressive approach and departure angles contribute to the best-in-class capability.

The 2014 Jeep Cherokee was designed with integrated aerodynamic features to reduce drag and assist in improving fuel economy. Aerodynamically designed features include:
  • Fully integrated, aerodynamic tuned body
  • Extensive rear spoiler
  • Integrated underbelly pans
  • Integrated sill aero spats
  • Tail lamp design meant to kick air off the side of the body
  • Lightweight aluminum wheels that were scrutinized for aero efficiency
The 2014 Jeep Cherokee incorporates subtle, signature Jeep cues throughout. At the front, Jeep designers subtly integrated a Wrangler outline into the front-end graphic.

The key waterline feature efficiently connects the rugged lower and smooth upper body.

The first key feature in the front of the all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee is the waterfall hood with the iconic peaked, seven-slotted grille which includes a crisp, horizontal snap – a feature in many classic Jeep vehicles, including the previous SJ, XJ, YJ and TJ models. The hood is clearly defined and separated from the front fenders in a modern twist of Jeep heritage. The one-piece hood and grille assembly ensures a precise build.

Advanced LED lighting technology is used throughout the all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee. Forward lighting features a very unique daytime running lamp (DRL) shape, which plays a dominant role in the fresh front-end proportion giving the impression of a slim headlamp. A well-hidden projector headlamp is almost in disguise below the DRLs, near the dark fascia. DRL feature lamps are placed high for water fording.

The front of the all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee visually flows through the rest of the vehicle with windows that link together, with the fast front windshield speeding to the backlight.

The sides of the Cherokee project a fluid tension in surface execution and feature the signature Jeep trapezoidal wheel arches. The rich chrome appearance of the daylight opening (DLO) shape and execution draws a close relationship to the flagship Jeep Grand Cherokee creating consistency across the Jeep lineup. The diving DLO line with kick-up draws inspiration from the iconic half doors on the Jeep Wrangler. This function of the drop-down DLO allows the driver better visibility while spotting obstacles on the trail, and creates a beautiful form on the road.

The all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee offers a choice of two open-air roof options. The new CommandView dual-pane sunroof is available for the first time in a mid-size SUV, as well as the industry-exclusive SkySlider open-air sunroof (late availability).

The rear of the new Cherokee is highlighted by the contemporary full LED tail lamps, which are an integral part of the rear backlight graphic, making the vehicle look stronger yet harmonious. This shape is the connection between the upper and lower rear as an interlocking graphic statement that brings a unique presence specific to this all-new Cherokee.

The lower fascia of the rear of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee was designed to allow for every license plate across the globe. The rear fascia also carries Jeep Cherokee-specific rear fog lamps and reflex.

The 2014 Jeep Cherokee is a design that is very adaptable.

The Trail Rated 2014 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk model takes rugged design and capability to a whole new level. Exclusive exterior and interior colors, functional differences such as signature red front tow hooks, skid plates, and wider fender flares to accommodate aggressive all-terrain tires all add to Cherokee’s rugged exterior appearance.

The all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee is available in four different models: Jeep Cherokee Sport, Jeep Cherokee Latitude, Jeep Cherokee Limited and the Trail Rated Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk.

The Jeep Cherokee mid-size SUV will offer consumers 10 different exterior colors from which to choose: Bright White Clear Coat, Brilliant Black Crystal Metallic Clear Coat, Billet Silver Metallic Clear Coat, Deep Cherry Red Crystal Pearl Coat, Eco Green Pearl Coat, Mango Tango Pearl Coat, Cashmere Pearl Coat, Granite Crystal Metallic Clear Coat, True Blue Pearl Coat, and Anvil Clear Coat.

2014 Jeep Cherokee Interior DesignThe inspiration for the all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee interior included exotic locations and terrain around the world that brought beautiful imagery to mind. The Cherokee interior is a sophisticated blend of hand-sculpted fluid shapes, high-quality materials, innovative color and material choices, precision craftsmanship, state-of-the-art technology and thoughtful, clever features. It is inviting and comfortable.

“The Jeep brand is well-known around the world, so when we were designing the Cherokee interior, we looked to the world for inspiration,” said Klaus Busse, Head of Interior Design. “Exotic countries such as Morocco, legendary terrain such as Mt. Vesuvius in Italy, and iconic landscapes, including the Grand Canyon were the inspiration for the color, tones and finishes used in the new 2014 Jeep Cherokee. Jeep, the go-anywhere do-anything SUV is forever connected with nature, so there is no better inspiration for the new interior of the Cherokee than some of the most intriguing landscapes around the world.”

The 2014 Cherokee interior was designed using four key principals:
  • make an emotional design impact
  • use high-quality materials
  • include state-of-the-art technology
  • develop clever storage features that use the interior space wisely
Emotional designWhen Jeep designers started work on the all-new interior of the 2014 Cherokee, they envisioned using unique elements to create an interior identity that customers can only get in an American icon.

The Jeep brand’s recent Grand Cherokee and Wrangler introductions set the foundation for a new direction in interiors that the new Cherokee builds upon. Hand-sculpted, fluid shapes are found throughout the cabin. The interior has a strong, striking appearance but also has graceful movement. The water line is wing-like, reminiscent of an eagle soaring with its wings spread wide, supporting the instrument panel. The fluid shapes carry from the instrument panel around to the door panels. The sculptured appearance of the instrument panel is juxtaposed with the architectural detail of the air vents, evoking the exposed structure of a building or vertebrae in a skeleton.

The all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee stays true to the Jeep brand inspiration from the brand’s heritage. The signature trapezoidal plan view feature line is classic Jeep, reminiscent of the trapezoidal wheel arches on the exterior. The center stack bezel is inspired by the outline of the front grille of the 1940s Willys Jeep and continues the design language of its larger sibling, the Grand Cherokee.

The well-crafted components in the interior offer world-class levels of fit and finish.

The all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee is available with five interior choices inspired from exotic locations and landscapes around the world.

The country of Morocco at night was the inspiration for the black interiors. When the sun sets in Morocco the light reflects the shapes and brings them to the light. There is high contrast with golden tones. Morocco interior is black with warm Moroccan Sun accent stitching, providing a contrast to the black. Morocco is available in cloth or leather and is a choice on all trim levels of the Cherokee.

Iceland was the inspiration for the black/light gray interiors. The cool hues reflect the Icelandic ocean and the cold terrain. The gray isn’t too warm. It stays neutral. Silver accents complement the cool tone of the black and gray interior. Iceland is available in cloth or leather and is an option on Cherokee Sport, Latitude and Limited models.

Kilimanjaro inspired the Trailhawk-exclusive interior. The mountain and the Masai tribe that lives in the region influenced the design. The Jeep brown interior with red accents was born of the red hue of the earth in the region, the result of high sulfur content from volcanic eruptions over the years, giving the ground a red hue. Red is also a dominant color for the Masai tribe. The fabric in the cloth seats resembles a handmade basket weave. Golden-tone accents finish out the warm interior. Kilimanjaro interior is cloth with leather trim and is exclusive to the Cherokee Trailhawk model.

The Jeep brown interior was inspired by the Grand Canyon, American nature at its best. Based on the hues in the rocks of the Grand Canyon, the warm, rich brown features golden-tone accent stitching. Grand Canyon is a cloth interior and is available on Cherokee Latitude models.

An image of Mt. Vesuvius in Italy inspired the Jeep-exclusive dark brown and Indigo Blue leather interior, Vesuvio. The dark brown and dark blue colors are highlighted with white accent stitching and silver trim. Vesuvio is available as a leather interior on Cherokee Limited models.

High-quality materialsPremium materials abound wherever the customer touches the vehicle – the door uppers, the center armrest and the upper instrument panel. Interior trim soft to the touch and pleasing to the eye is found throughout the cabin.

A vinyl-wrapped, stitched instrument panel brow is standard on all models and the stitching carries over to the center console armrest and front door armrests.

Seats in the all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee are ergonomically designed to support the contour of the body, and are trimmed with premium cloth or quality Nappa leather and are available with power adjustable, heated/ventilated seats with memory. Premium cloth fabrics include a unique interlocking graphic.

Unique features such as the available heated, leather-wrapped steering wheel, second-row seats that recline and move fore and aft, and available wireless charging pad will delight drivers and passengers alike.

State-of-the-art technologyThe all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee was designed with thoughtful, state-of-the-art, high-tech features and amenities that are intuitive and easy-to-use.

The world-class thin-film transistor (TFT) 3.5-inch grayscale or 7-inch full-color reconfigurable instrument cluster allows the driver to enjoy a customized user experience and receive information and vehicle feedback in the format they prefer while keeping their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.

The easy-to-use instrument cluster displays the basic information a driver needs at his or her fingertips but also allows the driver to add information they desire, similar to an iPhone.

The driver can select from a multitude of information that can be displayed in the center of the gauge cluster including turn-by-turn navigation, speed, real-time fuel economy, safety warnings, available Adaptive Cruise Control-Plus, audio information and Jeep-specific features including Selec-Terrain.

The available ParkSense Parallel/Perpendicular Park Assist System (first Chrysler Group availability) is displayed in the center of the gauge cluster and operated with buttons on the steering wheel and the shifter. The graphic walks the driver through the steps necessary to utilize the park assist system. The passion for the brand Jeep designers have is a fun fact in the park assist screen, which features a 1941 Jeep Willys graphic on each side of the open parking space.

An available award-winning 8.4-inch touchscreen multimedia command center – the largest in the segment – or the standard 5-inch touchscreen multimedia command center are attractive, intuitive and easy-to-use, and are located in the center stack. The Uconnect system allows the driver to control the audio, climate controls, heated/ventilated seats and much more from the touchscreen, redundant controls located on the center stack below the touchscreen or with voice commands. The touchscreen buttons are large and easy-to-see at a glance. The 8.4-inch color touchscreen Uconnect Access is user-friendly and includes Bluetooth connectivity, SiriusXM Radio, navigation, music, apps (Pandora, Aha, iHeartRadio and more), voice-to-text messaging and streaming audio capability.

The all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee sports a thoughtfully designed, holistic interior system which provides maximum user convenience, including an integrated phone docking station and an available wireless charging pad concealed in the center console.

A premium 506-watt sound system is available with nine speakers and a subwoofer.

The 2014 Cherokee features the newly designed three-spoke Jeep steering wheel with audio, voice and speed controls, adding a new level of technical sophistication.

Clever storage featuresThoughtful, clever storage features make the most of the available interior space in the all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee.

A refined, covered top bin is located above the center stack on top of the instrument panel for secured storage of items such as a wallet or phone. The front-passenger seat in the 2014 Jeep Cherokee folds flat and offers hidden, in-seat storage by flipping up the passenger seat cushion.

The all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee features a glove box storage space deep and large enough to hold an iPad or most laptop computers.

The center console hosts the integrated phone docking station, USB and SD ports and auxiliary- power source. A small storage slot is located between the cup holders and the center console armrest, making the best use of the space available.

Two front cup holders incorporate grips to secure different sized beverage containers and are rubber lined, which makes them very easy to clean.

The center armrest on the 2014 Cherokee provides storage underneath and includes a large bin with an easy-to-clean rubber mat as well as housing the optional CD player, if equipped. The Cherokee features up to two 12-volt power outlets, one in the instrument panel and, on select models, a second outlet in the center console.

Available door map pockets incorporate beverage holders large enough for 20-ounce bottles.

Second-row seats recline and move fore and aft to increase legroom or storage room as needed.

The class-exclusive Jeep Cargo Management System makes the most of the cargo space in the all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee. A universal module rack is mounted on the side in the rear cargo area and provides for hooks and a removable grocery bag. Other optional accessories compatible with the system are available through Mopar and include items such as off-road accessory kit for Trailhawk models including a tow rope and gloves and more, cargo bin, cargo mat, and a foldable cooler and first aid/emergency kit. The accessories mount securely to the rack for storage solutions the adventurous customer desires.

The all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee is engineered to be the most capable mid-size sport-utility vehicle (SUV) while providing premium on-road driving dynamics and improved fuel economy of up to 31 miles per gallon (mpg) – a more than 45-percent improvement compared with the outgoing Jeep mid-size SUV.

“With the all-new Jeep Cherokee we’ve engineered several groundbreaking attributes that will redefine how consumers think about mid-size SUVs,” said Chris Barman, Vehicle Line Executive, C and D Segment Vehicles — Chrysler Group LLC. “Innovative new 4x4 systems with rear-axle disconnect ensure the new Cherokee is the most capable mid-size SUV while delivering a superior on-road driving experience and vastly improved fuel economy of up to 31 mpg.”

Go anywhere Jeep capability
The all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee provides a choice of three innovative 4x4 systems for best-in-class 4x4 capability in all weather conditions. The Jeep Cherokee is the first mid-size SUV to feature rear-axle disconnect, resulting in reduced energy loss when 4x4 capability isn’t needed – improving fuel efficiency. The rear-axle disconnect seamlessly switches between two- and four-wheel drive for full-time torque management and does not require input from the driver.

Jeep Active Drive IAvailable on the Cherokee Sport, Latitude and Limited models, Jeep Active Drive I features a single power transfer unit (PTU) which is fully automatic and delivers seamless operation in and out of four-wheel drive at any speed. The system does not require any driver intervention or feedback, delivers yaw correction during dynamic events and improves both understeer and oversteer conditions. Jeep Active Drive I offers balanced torque distribution with brake traction control. The four-wheel-drive performance results from a fully variable wet clutch housed in the rear drive module. The clutch supplies the proper amount of torque for any driving condition, including slippery conditions, aggressive starts and dynamic driving. Sophisticated algorithms enable the system to contribute to the driving dynamics while interacting with the electronic stability control (ESC) system when approaching the traction limits of the road surface.

Jeep Active Drive IIAvailable on the Cherokee Sport, Latitude and Limited models, Jeep Active Drive II includes a two-speed PTU with torque management and low range. 4-Low mode locks the front and rear drive shafts for low speed power or towing. Low range provides a 2.92:1 gear reduction. The gear reduction allows for enhanced climbing ability as well as outstanding crawl ratios for severe off-road conditions. The 2014 Jeep Cherokee with Jeep Active Drive II gives the off-road adventurer a crawl ratio of 56:1 when powered by the 2.4-liter MultiAir2 Tigershark I-4 engine, and 47.8:1 when powered by the new 3.2-liter Pentastar V-6 engine, which is as much as a 90-percent improvement versus the outgoing Liberty. Jeep Active Drive II works in conjunction with the Selec-Terrain system to aggressively modify the torque distribution while monitoring the engine transmission and ESC system, providing power to the wheels that will deliver the most traction.

Jeep Active Drive LockJeep Active Drive Lock includes all the features of Jeep Active Drive II and adds a locking rear differential for superior low-speed power for rock crawling or severe off-road conditions. The locking rear differential is selectable in any low-range terrain mode, but will lock automatically when in certain modes, such as “Rock,” to maximize tractive effort, which the tire patch can support. Jeep Active Drive Lock is standard on all Trailhawk models.

All 4x4 systems feature the Jeep brand’s Selec-Terrain traction control system. Selec-Terrain allows the driver, with a push of a button on the Selec-Terrain dial, to choose the on- and off-road setting for optimum performance. Up to five customized settings are offered: Auto, Snow, Sport, Sand/Mud and Rock.

Selec-Terrain is designed to optimize the four-wheel-drive systems for unsurpassed control and capability. When in neutral, the 2014 Jeep Cherokee equipped with Jeep Active Drive II disconnects the driveline for flat towing behind another vehicle, such as a recreational vehicle (RV).

The all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee offers a new, segment-exclusive, important capability feature – Selec-Speed Control. Selec-Speed Control features both Hill-descent Control and Hill-ascent Control, allowing the Cherokee to climb and descend steep grades with minimal driver input. The ESC system controls engine torque and brake pressure to maintain target speed while driving off-road on uphill, level and downhill surfaces and over obstacles. The feature enables the driver to focus on steering while navigating technical off-road terrain. Selec-Speed Control is activated by a dedicated button on the Selec-Terrain switch. The driver-selectable target speed, ranging from 1 to 5 miles per hour, can be adjusted by using the +/- shifter input. Selec-Speed Control is only available in 4-Low.

Trail Rated
The all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk model with the standard off-road package is Trail Rated. The “Trail Rated” badge on the Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk indicates that the vehicle is designed to perform in a variety of challenging off-road conditions identified by five key consumer-oriented performance categories: traction, ground clearance, maneuverability, articulation and water fording.

The Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk boasts an approach angle of 29.8 degrees, a departure angle of 32.1 degrees and breakover angle of 23.3 degrees. Running ground clearance is 8.7 inches.

The Jeep Cherokee delivers best-in-class V-6 towing capability of 4,500 pounds.

Segment-first nine-speed transmission, world-class enginesThe all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee is the first mid-size SUV to feature a standard nine-speed automatic transmission, the first ever featured in a production vehicle, the 948TE transmission.

“We are witnessing a milestone with the introduction of Chrysler Group’s first all-new nine-speed transmission which debuts in the 2014 Jeep Cherokee,” said Mircea Gradu, Vice President and Head of Transmission, Powertrain and Driveline Engineering. “Its wide 9.81 ratio spread generates greater efficiency, elevates refinement and enables the kind of capability Jeep customers demand.”

Cherokee’s nine-speed transmission delivers numerous benefits customers will appreciate, including aggressive launches, smooth power delivery at highway speeds and improved fuel efficiency versus a six-speed automatic transmission.

The new transmission’s gear ratios afford the right response at the right time, from aggressive launches to smooth power delivery at highway speeds, a product of smaller ratio steps between the gears. The ratios are:

1st – 4.71     6th – 0.81
2nd – 2.84    7th – 0.70
3rd – 1.91     8th – 0.58
4th – 1.38     9th – 0.48
5th – 1.00

The Jeep Cherokee’s all-new nine-speed transmission provides a more responsive driving experience with quicker acceleration and smoother shifting. The wide ratio spread delivers an aggressive first gear ratio of 4.71 for low-end performance and small gear ratio steps which provide smooth transitions for gear-to-gear while offering a unique set of four overdrive ratios to benefit highway fuel economy and reduce overall noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) levels.

Flexible enough to accommodate the Jeep Cherokee engine’s full range of torques, the all-new gearbox delivers not only the durability customers expect but a ride quality near luxury car levels complements of the precise shift schedules.

The all-new, fully electronic nine-speed automatic features on-the-fly shift map changing, with Auto Stick manual shifting capability via Electronic Range Select. More than 40 individual shift maps for specific conditions optimize shift quality and shift points maximizing fuel economy, performance and drivability. To determine the appropriate shift mode, the sophisticated software takes into account variables, including engine torque gradients, kick-down events, longitudinal and lateral acceleration and grade changes. For improved driving comfort and refinement, additional parameters integrated into the transmission control strategy include: temperature, speed and electronic stability control. The result is automatic shifting ideally attuned to the performance requirements of almost any driving demand.

The automatic transmission increased vehicle fuel economy through the ratio spread and mechanical efficiency by operating at lower engine revolutions per minute (rpm) in both city and highway environments. The addition of more gear ratios also helps reduce the perceived speed changes normally associated with upshifting and downshifting.

Gear changes are nearly imperceptible due to the evenly spaced gear steps between each gear ratio. Internally the transmission has four gear sets and six shift elements – multi-disc clutches, dog clutches and brakes. Only three shift elements are open at any time. With fewer open shift elements, drag losses due to multiple parts rotating relative to one another are reduced, improving fuel efficiency.

The all-new nine-speed transmission’s shift schedule also contributes to an anticipated city-cycle fuel-economy boost of up to 2 mpg, compared with a conventional six-speed automatic transmission, when mated with the new 3.2-liter Pentastar V-6.

But a Jeep isn’t a Jeep unless it delivers superior off-road performance. So the new standard-equipment nine-speed gearbox helps demonstrate that the new Jeep Cherokee definitely belongs in the storied brand’s lineup. The tall 4.71:1 first gear ratio, when coupled to the 4.08:1 final drive in the 2.4-liter MultiAir 2 Tigershark engine and the 3.52:1 final drive ratio in the 3.2-liter Pentastar V-6 engine contribute to the class-leading off-road crawl ratio capability when paired with Jeep Active Drive II.

Pentastar pedigreeThe new dual overhead-cam 3.2-liter Pentastar V-6 engine makes its debut in the 2014 Jeep Cherokee. It is the first derivative of the celebrated 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 named one of Ward’s 10 Best Engines three years running – producing 271 horsepower and 239 lb.-ft. of torque and fuel economy improvements of up to 30 percent compared with the model it replaces.

“Chrysler Group’s Pentastar V-6 engines are the epitome of efficient design,” said Bob Lee, Vice President and Head of Engine and Electrified Propulsion Engineering. “The all-new Jeep Cherokee will benefit greatly from the 3.2-liter Pentastar’s power and refinement – compelling attributes that complement efficiencies gained from design elements such as an integrated exhaust manifold, high compression ratio pistons and variable-displacement oil pump.”

The available new 3.2-liter Pentastar V-6 engine benefits from the same innovations that earned its larger displacement predecessor industry-wide acclaim for efficiency, power and refinement. For the driver, that means a refined driving experience with reduced NVH and an exceptional balance of higher specific power output (84.2 horsepower per liter) while delivering EPA fuel economy ratings of 19 mpg city, 28 mpg highway and 22 mpg combined for 4x2 models.

Individual exhaust-manifold runners are integrated into the aluminum cylinder-head casting, a key Pentastar-family differentiator. This feature not only reduces weight and produces packaging benefits; it also increases manufacturing efficiency.

The 24-valve engine’s 10.7:1 compression ratio aids in lowering fuel consumption and improves performance while the variable-displacement oil pump further reduces parasitic losses to maximize fuel economy. The pump is programmed to operate as needed, staying in low pressure mode at rpms below 3,500, and then bumping up pressure as demand follows engine-speed.

The benefits of the E85-compatible 3.2-liter extend beyond the Jeep Cherokee’s engine compartment to the environment. A unique paper cartridge replaces a conventional spin-on oil filter. Squeeze the oil from the cartridge and it can be incinerated.

To further reduce its environmental impact and reduce the cost of ownership, the 3.2-liter Pentastar V-6 engine uses organic acid technology (OAT) coolant, which provides superior corrosion resistance compared with conventional antifreeze and lasts up to 10 years or 150,000 miles.

The new V-6 engine features a centrifugal oil separator that reduces oil consumption and operating costs while precious-metal spark plugs offer a service life of 100,000 miles without degradation before replacement.

The new 3.2-liter Pentastar V-6 carries over all the design features that make smooth power delivery one of the most captivating traits of the 3.6-liter engine.

A 60-degree, deep-skirt, die-cast-aluminum cylinder block with six-bolt main caps afford optimal stiffness for mitigation of NVH. Also contributing to NVH reduction are:
  • a structural windage tray to complement block stiffness
  • a structural aluminum oil pan
  • direct-mounted alternator and A/C compressor that increases stiffness
  • select-fit pistons with polymer-graphite-coated piston skirts
  • “silent chain” timing drive with inverted teeth for minimal sprocket contact
  • contoured composite cylinder-head covers
  • glass-reinforced nylon composite intake manifold
Further enhancing the driving experience is the specially designed intake manifold, which also features low-rumble tuning.

The Jeep Cherokee’s V-6 engine boasts forged-steel connecting rods and piston-squirter jets, and its cam drive and valve-train components require no scheduled maintenance.

The new 3.2-liter Pentastar V-6 engine was subjected to 3.3 million customer-equivalent miles prior to production.

The Tigershark advantageEfficiency and refinement also are hallmarks of Chrysler Group’s 16-valve, 2.4-liter Tigershark MultiAir 2 I-4 engine, which comes standard in the all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The 2.4-liter Tigershark engine delivers an EPA highway fuel economy rating of 31 mpg for 4x2 models, a more than 45-percent improvement versus the outgoing model. The 2.4-liter MultiAir 2 Tigershark I-4 engine produces 184 horsepower and 171 lb.-ft. of torque.

The acclaimed electro-hydraulic fully variable valve-lift system uses a column of oil in place of the traditional mechanical link between the camshaft and intake valves. As a result, it delivers precise control of the intake-valve events – beginning and end – delivering reductions in engine-pumping losses and increases in volumetric efficiency.

In addition to reducing carbon-dioxide emissions, MultiAir accounts for a fuel-economy boost of up to 7.5 percent, compared with engines with conventional valve trains.

Refinement was a key consideration in the design of every Tigershark feature, from its fully isolated aluminum head cover with integrated oil-separation system, to its high-pressure, die-cast aluminum block.

Sandwiched between the block and the steel oil pan is a lightweight, lost-foam aluminum ladder frame with integral oil filter and oil cooler adapter. This lends additional structural rigidity. The oil pan itself benefits from refinement. Acoustic material is sandwiched between its outer and inner stampings.

Friction mitigation also contributes to reduced NVH, with the added benefit of enhancing durability. The Tigershark’s polymer-coated piston skirts accommodate tighter piston-to-bore tolerances. Cast-aluminum pistons with a compression ratio of 10:1 are designed specifically for the engine and MultiAir system. Each bore is fitted with individual piston oil-squirters in the block that spray oil on the bottom of the pistons and bore walls to maintain cylinder-wall and piston temperatures. This feature also helps prevent hot spots that could lead to knock and improve performance and fuel economy.

Fitted to the forged-steel crankshaft are new powder-forged-steel connecting rods that feature a full-floating piston pin with diamond-like carbon coating. This further reduces friction and improves fuel efficiency.

Vibration is minimized with the use of a balance shaft module. And to maintain adequate oiling at all engine speeds, the 2.4-liter Tigershark features a two-stage oil-pressure relief system that reduces engine-oil pumping loads at low engine speeds for better fuel efficiency.

Other key features of the 2.4-liter I-4 include:
  • 360-degree engine-to-transmission attachment
  • Coil-on-plug ignition with dual precious-metal spark plugs
  • Front-end accessory drive with automatic tensioning single-belt drive
Similar to the Pentastar, the Tigershark delivers reduced operating costs because its cam drive, cam-phasing and valve-train components require no scheduled maintenance. Its spark plugs have a service life of 100,000 miles and the engine’s corrosion-inhibiting coolant is expected to last 150,000 miles or 10 years of normal use.

World-class architectureFIAT Group architecture is the basis for the underpinnings of the all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The Compact U.S. Wide (CUS-wide) platform’s proven modular architecture means many models can be built using the same basic underpinnings. The result is better quality and reliability, as well as lower costs, less development time and tooling. The architecture Cherokee is built on is comprised of common, modular and interchangeable components and allows for modularity of the wheelbase, front track, rear track, front overhang, length and width across vehicle lines.

The 2014 Jeep Cherokee’s body structure has a high-strength steel content of roughly 65 percent. Hot stamped-, high-strength- and ultra-high-strength steel are used to construct a strong, lightweight, solid vehicle architecture.

Superior on-road performance
The 2014 Jeep Cherokee premium on-road manners are a result of a number of efforts by Jeep engineers. The front independent suspension with MacPherson struts provides 6.7 inches of travel while the rear independent multi-link suspension provides up to 7.8 inches of travel for better articulation. The isolated rear cradle, aluminum front cross member and superior torsional rigidity deliver customers a quieter, smoother ride with improved handling characteristics.

The electronic power steering system (EPS) improves fuel efficiency and contributes to the Jeep Cherokee’s nimbleness with a turn circle radius of approximately 36 feet in 4x2 models, approximately 38 feet in 4x4 models and roughly 39 feet for the Trailhawk model.

With EPS all of the power assist is provided via an electric motor system rather than a traditional hydraulic system. Because the system is fully electronic, the driver experiences optimal steering effort at all vehicle speeds, and there is less noise and better fuel efficiency since there is no parasitic loss from a power steering pump.

The boost, or assist, is variable and speed sensitive, responding to sensors monitoring steering torque, steering wheel speed and angle and vehicle speed. The steering system is fully integrated with the vehicle’s ESC system and helps to compensate in split-traction, torque steer and pull-drift (crowned road) situations.

The Cherokee’s 17- or 18-inch tires and wheels offer drivers confident traction in snow and wet conditions.

Drivers and passengers will enjoy conversations when traveling in the all-new Cherokee, complements of premium NVH insulation.

Fuel economy in the 2014 Jeep Cherokee improves more than 45 percent when compared with the outgoing Jeep Liberty. The Cherokee’s rear-axle disconnect seamlessly switches between two- and four-wheel drive for full-time torque management, resulting in reduced energy loss when 4x4 capability isn’t needed, improving fuel efficiency without sacrificing capability in all weather conditions.

The all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee offers outstanding heating and cooling performance including heat up, cool down and defrost, as well as quiet performance.

Engineers used Computational Fluid Dynamics to deliver just the right amount of airflow through the ductwork. A variable displacement compressor continually matches the requested cooling load, which keeps the system stable and helps it operate quietly and efficiently. The central unit doors of the system are electronic; there are no cables, so drivers and passengers experience a more consistent feel when the system is on.

The air outlets are adjusted with rack-and-pinion vane adjusters, which make them both feel pleasant to the touch and give a consistent feel when they’re repositioned in a different direction. Models equipped with automatic temperature control also include a humidity sensor, which creates an automatic de-fog capability.

Customer-focused vehicle developmentThe all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee was developed and engineered to exceed expectations for customer satisfaction, quality and reliability. Engineers used Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) to ensure the voice of the customer was captured during the vehicle development process. DFSS folds in voice of the customer data along with lessons learned to ensure every vehicle is of the highest quality possible.

The all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee is the no-compromise solution for the adventurous customer who wants legendary Jeep capability without sacrificing fuel economy or a premium on-road driving experience.

The 2014 Jeep Cherokee offers customers two industry-exclusive open-air options – the new CommandView panoramic sunroof or the Sky Slider full-length open canvas roof (late availability).

The interior of the all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee is modern, inviting and comfortable. A sophisticated, refined design, hand-sculpted forms, signature Jeep design cues, high-quality materials, precision craftsmanship and attention-to-detail raise the bar in the mid-size SUV segment. The Cherokee interior is a sophisticated blend of hand-sculpted fluid shapes, high-quality materials, innovative color and material choices, precision craftsmanship, state-of-the-art technology and features that drivers and passengers appreciate.

Premium materials abound wherever the customer touches the vehicle – the door uppers and armrests, the center armrest, the upper instrument panel. Interior trim that is soft to the touch and pleasing to the eye is found throughout the cabin.

Seats in the all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee are ergonomically designed to support the contour of the body, are trimmed with premium cloth or quality Nappa leather and available as power adjustable, heated/ventilated seats with memory. Premium cloth fabrics include a unique interlocking graphic. The 60/40 split second-row seats adjust fore and aft for increased passenger comfort and cargo flexibility.

Unique features such as the available heated, leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, an available wireless charging pad and many more will delight both drivers and passengers alike.

The all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee was designed with thoughtful, state-of-the-art, high-tech features and amenities that are intuitive, easy-to-use.

The world-class thin-film transistor (TFT) LED 3.5-inch grayscale or 7-inch full-color reconfigurable instrument cluster allows the driver to enjoy a customized user experience and receive information and vehicle feedback in the format they prefer while keeping their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.

The available Parallel/Perpendicular Park Assist System (first Chrysler Group availability) is displayed in the center of the gauge cluster and operated with buttons on the steering wheel and the shifter. The graphic walks the driver through the steps necessary to utilize the park assist system. Jeep designer’s passion for the brand shines through in the park assist screen, which features a 1941 Jeep Willys graphic on each side of the open parking space.

An available award-winning 8.4-inch touchscreen multimedia command center – the largest in the segment – or the standard 5-inch touchscreen multimedia command center are attractive, intuitive and easy-to-use, and located in the center stack. The 2014 Cherokee equipped with the Uconnect system allows the driver to control the audio, climate, heated/ventilated seats and much more from the touchscreen, redundant controls located on the center stack below the touchscreen or with voice commands.

The class-exclusive Jeep Cargo Management System makes the most of the cargo space in the all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee. A universal module rack is mounted on the side in the rear cargo area and provides for hooks and a removable grocery bag. Other optional accessories compatible with the system are available through Mopar and include an off-road accessory kit for Trailhawk models that features a tow rope, gloves and more; cargo bin, ‘cargo mat’, foldable cooler and first aid/emergency kit are just some of the accessories available that mount securely to the rack for secure storage solutions the adventurous customer desires.

Safety and SecurityThe new Cherokee was engineered with more than 70 available safety and security features. The Jeep Cherokee starts with a strong foundation constructed with 65 percent high-strength steel. Engineers then added both active and passive safety and security features, including: Chrysler Group vehicle firsts ParkSense Parallel/Perpendicular Park Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control-Plus, Forward Collision Warning-Plus, and LaneSense Lane Departure Warning-Plus; 9-1-1 assist call; ESC; Electronic Roll Mitigation; Blind-spot Monitoring; Rear Cross Path detection; ParkView rear backup camera with dynamic grid lines and 10 standard air bags.

The ParkSense Parallel/Perpendicular Park Assist feature in the all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee is a first in a Chrysler Group vehicle. Using ultrasonic parking sensors on the bumper, the system will find and guide the customer into an available parking space when the driver initiates parking maneuvers. The parking guidance system controls the steering angle automatically; the driver controls the gear position, brake, and accelerator. Parallel parking is possible on either side of the car; during perpendicular parking, the vehicle is backed into the space.

Adaptive Cruise Control-Plus, a first for a Chrysler Group vehicle, is significant for its capacity to bring the vehicle to a complete stop without driver intervention in certain conditions. Radar and video sensors identify the locations of vehicles traveling ahead of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The sensors also help ensure the vehicles are separated by a gap determined by the driver. If the gap is dramatically breached, the ESC system can aggressively deploy the vehicle’s brakes to affect a full stop, even if the driver never touches the brake pedal. To resume travel, the driver need only press a button on the steering wheel or tap the accelerator pedal.

Forward Collision Warning-Plus, another Chrysler Group first, addresses traffic-gap changes when Adaptive Cruise Control-Plus is inactive. When radar and video sensors detect a fast-closing obstacle ahead, the system pre-fills the brakes to prepare for emergency driver intervention. If collision risk remains, Forward Collision Warning-Plus correspondingly ratchets up the response with:
  • audible and visual warnings
  • a brief brake deployment to alert the driver
  • a 1.5-second brake deployment to quicken the driver’s reaction time
  • deployment of Advanced Brake Assist (ABA) if the driver is not braking aggressively enough
LaneSense Lane Departure Warning-Plus, which is offered for the first time in a Chrysler Group vehicle, uses a camera-based vision sensor to establish the Jeep Cherokee’s position on the road. If there occurs an unintentional lane drift, determined by trajectory change and the absence of turn-signal activation, the system will deliver a visual warning and a haptic warning – the subtle introduction of torque from the electric power steering (EPS) system. If the driver unintentionally drifts too far, the system provides a secondary visual warning.
