Robby Gordon Partners with Torchmate for the 2012 KoH

Capitalizing on a 10-year relationship with Lincoln Electric, Robby Gordon Motorsports has embraced the new addition to the Lincoln family and welcomed Torchmate CNC Cutting Systems onto Planet Robby. Gordon, who has acquired the Torchmate Racing built TTB car for the upcoming Griffin King of the Hammers event, will begin testing the rebadged Speed Energy #77 car this week and he has tasked rock crawling champion and former Pirate4x4.com owner, Lance Clifford, to navigate.  “Although I have not yet met Lance, he has come highly recommended and is a welcome addition to our team. We put a lot of value in having the right people to help us succeed,” said Gordon.  Clifford, who has worked during KOH the last 4 years providing live web based coverage, is looking forward to racing. “I was just planning on enjoying the event with my family, but when the best off-road driver in the world calls you up and asks you to navigate you don’t think twice about accepting.”
The new relationship will put Torchmate CNC cutting systems to work in both Robby Gordon Motorsports North Carolina and Southern California facilities, and will see Torchmate as an associate sponsor of Gordon’s new venture into Ultra4 racing as well as his current SCORE Trophy Truck and Dakar off-road programs. “We’re excited to work with Robby Gordon and it’s a perfect fit with Torchmate philosophy on racing and business,” said Bill Kunz, general manager of Torchmate. “The same Torchmate machines the general public can purchase will be put to good use at the hands of Robby Gordon Motorsports,” Kunz added.

The demands of the King of the Hammers race test the merit of both driver and machine due to the brutal terrain. In its 6th running, this year’s course (which remains a closely guarded secret until race week) will be the longest and most difficult to date.  The delicate balance of rock crawling’s technical skill set, coupled with wide open assaults in the open desert, require a vehicle that is comfortable at two completely different ends of the off-road spectrum.  Gordon had this to say about his first impression of the vehicle, “The craftsmanship in the construction of this TTB car is a testament to the quality of products Torchmate builds. We build racecars of the highest standard in our fabrication shops, and this vehicle looks like something we built. I am excited to have a chance to race it in KOH and know we can do well. This relationship is not just a one-race deal; we are looking forward to building the Torchmate brand alongside our existing partners and introducing Torchmate to a new market.” A number of crossover drivers have attempted the King of the Hammers in the last 5 years, but few return, and even less make the leap to car owner.
The buzz created by Ultra4 racing fans suggests that Robby Gordon’s presence this year will no doubt be one of the highlights of the event. “It’s always great to see new drivers make an investment in our sport, but when it’s a driver as popular as Robby Gordon, that creates the potential to introduce a wide selection of fans and have a positive result for all of our teams,” responded Dave Cole of Hammerking Productions when asked about his newest racer. “It’s a lot like the Baja 1000,” Gordon closed with, “It’s a huge event people plan the whole year around.  I can’t wait to give it a shot!”

Jeep Liberty Air Bag Investigation

JANUARY 27, 2012 AT 2:52 PM

Chrysler cooperating in Jeep Liberty air bag probe

Washington- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is upgrading an investigation into nearly 390,000 Jeep Liberty SUVs for reports of inadvertent air bag deployments.
NHTSA said Friday it had upgraded its investigation into 386,873 2002-2003 Jeep Liberty models after identifying 87 reports of air bag inadvertent deployment that have resulted in 50 alleged injuries.
The injuries include burns, cuts and bruises to the upper body. About half - 42 of the 87 incidents -- involved the driver front air bag, and the remaining 45 involved both the driver and passenger front air bags inadvertently deploying without a crash.
Chrysler said it was working with NHTSA.
"We are cooperating fully with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration with this engineering analysis on 2002-2003 Jeep Wrangler models to determine the root cause of this condition," Chrysler spokesman Vince Muniga.
Some occurred at vehicle startup; others took place when the vehicle was being operated. Some owners noted that the air bag warning light had illuminated, or illuminated intermittently, and that this occurred just prior to the air bag deployment. Others said they did not observe any illumination of the air bag light. Chrysler says an electronic circuit that controls air bag deployment fails, possibility caused by a transient voltage spike.
Chrysler is identifying potential root causes of the component's failure; no inadvertent airbags have deployed in vehicles manufactured after March 19, 2003.
NHTSA has investigated numerous vehicle model inadvertent airbag deployments in recent years.
Under government pressure, Ford Motor Co. in April agreed to recall 1.2 million more F-150 pickup trucks after more than 200 reports of sudden, unexpected air-bag deployments. In total, Ford recalled about 1.5 million vehicles to address the issue.

Ballistic Fab Files Ch. 11

January 24, 2012
Re-organization of Ballistic Fabrication

For Immediate Release:
Ballistic Fabrication is best known for its outstanding off-road product line and high quality in-house manufacturing capabilities. Ballistic has faced many adversities over the past few years related to inventory, product delivery and customer service. It is well known in the industry that while Ballistic Fabrication continues to supply large amounts of high quality parts worldwide, the aforementioned deficiencies have created longer than usual lead times in shipping and product delivery. These problems have been attributed in part to extremely rapid company growth which in turn led to inventory control issues.

Ballistic Fabrication has partnered with an investor to bring additional financial stability to the company. In an effort to better serve its customers, Ballistic has invested in a state-of-the-art inventory / shop management system. Ballistic will now be able to effectively manage production and inventory of every specific part in their catalog of thousands of part numbers. This information in turn will be reported live to Ballistics customers via the website. Ballistic hopes that this new system alleviates future confusion and issues related to potential backorders. In addition to these improvements, Ballistic now stocks a complete inventory of raw materials on hand. Ballistic hopes that this will alleviate backorders due to raw material supply shortages. Ballistic Fabrication has also found it necessary to restructure specific key personnel in the management and accounting team.
In addition to these changes, Ballistic has filed for Ch11 reorganization in order to restructure its financial obligations. Ballistic Fabrications lawyer stated the following -
“The past few years presented significant economic challenges to Ballistic Fabrication, LLC.  Material costs, shipping costs, and the overall economic downturn are only a few factors that played a role in Ballistics decision to file a petition for bankruptcy relief.  Contrary to any rumors circulating, Ballistic will not be shutting its doors.  Ballistic will be continuing operations while reorganizing its debts and obligations. This process will not affect Ballistics’ ability to produce quality products and to service its customers.  Ballistic and all of its dedicated employees are confident that they will emerge a stronger company.”
Ballistic Fabrication would like to thank its many loyal customers for years of support and looks forward to the opportunity to regain its customers trust and becoming the standard of excellence in the off-road industry.

How the Jeeps faired in the Dakar this year.

Egbert Wingens finished his first Dakar in a 2012 Jeep Wrangler on his 42nd birthday. 68th place isn't bad for your first rally. From what I can tell, only two Wranglers entered and only Wingens' finished in his petrol powered V8.  Willem Kien didn't make it past the third stage in his diesel JK. This was his first Dakar as well.

Gordon making some news

Hummer driver Robby Gordon has refused to give up on his dream of winning Dakar 2012 despite a clash with rival Stéphane Peterhansel that cost him more than 14 minutes on the event's final day in Chile before the border crossing into Peru on Thursday.
Gordon started Wednesday's 10th stage from Iquique to Arica, which featured a 234-mile competitive section, less than six minutes behind X-raid Mini pilot Peterhansel, albeit running first on the road. The rivals swapped position on several occasions before disaster struck for the American Gordon nearing the end of the special stage.
“I hit a rock with both right-side tires, and we've got some broken parts,” Gordon told Dakar.com. “Do I think I can win again? Of course. I was passing him [Peterhansel], he didn't move over and I clobbered a rock and got two flat tires at the same time. So, we've got our work cut out for us. We've got a damaged race car that we're going to have work on and there's a lot of damage from what I can see. Now we'll push, push, push even harder.”
Gordon's delay means he slips to third in the overall standings, 19 minutes, 51 seconds behind Peterhansel. But his efforts to reverse that deficit could be in vain if his appeal against exclusion from the event is unsuccessful.
Event organizers issued a statement early on Wednesday confirming that Gordon's Hummer had failed to comply with the technical regulations, which resulted in his disqualification from the rally. However, Gordon appealed the decision, and until the appeal is heard, the Californian will continue in the event

Dakar Stage 5 Wrap-up

Finally! A Diesel Jeep.

Nooooo!  It's the wrong one!  Jeep will be putting a diesel in the new Grand Cherokee.  The really good news is that they will also be adding 150 jobs when they reopen the Corner Assembly Plant and 1,100 jobs by adding a third shift at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant.

Now this is pure speculation on my part, but if they are putting a diesel in the Grand....the Wrangler can't be far behind.  Right? Chrysler? You hearin' me?
